Pentagon Paper Leaker Says I Should Have Done it Sooner

Daniel Ellsberg,
who hit the headlines about 40 years ago for leaking the Pentagon
papers to the New York Times, is in news once again. In his recent
statement to the media in New Orleans he said that he had one regret
about disclosing the secret history of US' involvement in Indochina
that he didn't do it sooner.

He was able to
do so because he worked in the Pentagon and afterward on the
classified report of the Vietnam War commissioned by the Defense
Secretary Robert McNamara. The research surmised that the war was
disastrous and that Americans had been kept uninformed for more than
20 years about their leaders' motive to stretch the conflict.

But Ellsberg
chose to keep mum despite knowing all this. "I didn’t tell
Congress any more than my boss did, so I participated" in the
cover-up, he said at the American Library Association’s annual
conference in New Orleans.

"Had I
given Congress the drawers full of material that I had,"
Ellsberg, 80, said, "I think the Vietnam war could not have
happened. Fifty-eight thousand American lives would have been saved.

"That’s a
heavy burden, and it’s why I’ve been saying for years … to not
do what I did. Don’t wait until the war gets started. Don’t wait
until we attack Iraq or Syria. Don’t wait until more people die and
more bombs have fallen. Show that the public is being misled, that
this is where we are going."

Ellsberg is not
positive and although he voted for Barack Obama for president in
2008 and maybe will do so again the coming year, he said Obama is
acting no different than his predecessors in being reluctant to back
out from an unpopular war like those in Iraq and Afghanistan.

"This is
not a good year to lose in Afghanistan," he said. "This is
not a good year to be charged, however foolishly or falsely, with
being a loser or a quitter or weak. …

"If you say
you’re withdrawing from Afghanistan or Iraq, and reduce (troop
levels) slowly, the public will be off your back. The people will
think … he’s moving in the right direction, which is false. The
president plans to be out of Afghanistan fully by 2014. I believe
that … is as false as any lie told by (Richard) Nixon or (Lyndon)
Johnson."

Ellsberg’s
conclusion: "Smart guys can get us into dumb wars and can’t
get us out of them."

"McNamara
was just as smart" as Obama, he said, "and Johnson was just
as smart and Nixon was just as smart, and that didn’t do us any
good."

A constant
problem that American policymakers have, Ellsberg said, is their
denial to learn from such disastrous experiences like the Soviet
Union’s occupation of Afghanistan and France’s involvement in
Indochina. Instead, he said, this has been Americans’ attitude: "We
don’t learn from history. We make history."

Putting a twist
on the George Santayana's frequently quoted warning, “Those who
cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it", he said:
"Those who do remember the past are also condemned to repeat it.
They find themselves making the same choices for the same reasons."

This, he said,
is where librarians can play an important role because they receive
and disseminate information that might prevent another needless,
endless war.”

"Get those
documents out," Ellsberg said. "This is your job. Please
let them know what the history has been and learn lessons harder than
what the president wants you to learn."

Had he been
convicted, Ellsberg was charged with 12 felony courts and up to 115
years of imprisonment for leaking the Pentagon Papers to The Times,
The Washington Post and 17 other newspapers. The case was
discontinued in 1973 after the judge learned that government was
doing illegal activities to dig up dirt on Ellsberg, including
barging into his psychiatrist's office.

Earlier this
month, on the 40th anniversary of The Times’ first installment of
the Pentagon Papers, the federal government declassified them.

Ellsberg, who
received prolonged standing ovations and cheers before and after his
speech, was brief in explaining why Americans, even people like him
who worked in high levels of the federal government, should let the
public know if national leaders are making a big mistake.

The oath that
federal officials take "is not an oath to the president or the
Congress, or to uphold secrecy," he said. "It is an oath to
support the Constitution of the United States."

We're not aware of any other sorting experiment at this scale and are
obviously very excited to be able to process so much data so quickly.

An interesting question came up while running experiments at such a
scale: Where do you put 1PB of sorted data? We were writing it to
48,000 hard drives (we did not use the full capacity of these disks,
though), and every time we ran our sort, at least one of our disks
managed to break (this is not surprising at all given the duration of
the test, the number of disks involved, and the expected lifetime of
hard disks). To make sure we kept our sorted petabyte safe, we asked
the Google File System to write three copies of each file to three
different disks.

Significantly improved handling of the so-called "stragglers" (parts of
computation that run slower than expected) was a key software technique
that helped sort 1PB. And of course, there are many other factors that

The final record breaking 8,002,530 downloads for web browser Firefox 3.0 took place in June.

"The enthusiasm and creativity of Firefox fans was key to making this happen," said marketing head Paul Kim.

Gareth Deaves of Guinness World Records called it "an extremely impressive accomplishment".

The official figure was confirmed after logs from download servers were
audited and checked to ensure duplicate and unfinished downloads were
not counted.

Mr Kim told the BBC News: "The notion of going for a world record,
as... nutty as it may have sounded, was a really sticky idea.

Marketing manager Mary Colvig said no party was planned to celebrate
the record until the actual certificate was presented by Guinness World
Records in London next week.

"Here at Mozilla headquarters (in Mountain View) I think most of us are
just going to try and get to bed early now that we have the
confirmation. We are all tired."

Another boost for the open source browser comes with the announcement
that it has increased its market share to more than 19% making it the

Sony Previews 'Life with PlayStation'

Sony is preparing a non-game service for its PlayStation 3 console that
at first glance is similar to one available on Nintendo's Wii.

Called "Life with PlayStation," the service will launch with news and
weather information channels but is set to be considerably expanded in
the future, said Kaz Hirai, president of Sony Computer Entertainment.

The basic interface was a globe of the Earth that could be spun to
reveal the different regions of the world. Major cities were marked on
the globe along with the current weather conditions and news headlines
pertaining to the city were listed in the corner of the screen. As you
browse, background music from the hard-disk in the PlayStation 3 can be
played either as a user-defined playlist or one chosen by the console.

The interface is similar to the news and weather channels on the
Nintendo Wii, which are navigated through a globe and offer similar
news and weather information.

It is different from the news and weather channels on the Nintendo Wii
in terms of graphics - the PlayStation 3 graphics have higher
resolution and the globe isn't a simple map of the world but a weather
satellite image showing the cloud patterns above the planet.

The news and weather channels are just some initial features, later
many other state-of-the-art features will be added to it. Plans are to
build a system that can visually present stored photos and movies
according to their recorded time and place, allowing users with their
friends and family to enjoy the visuals in chronological order," said
Hirai.

Release date is not yet fixed and will be announced soon anytime later.

Navtej Kohli - MS's Bluetooth patch Failed on XP

Microsoft has reissued a critical Windows security patch, saying that
the fix didn't initially work on the most recent versions of Windows

Microsoft spokesman wrote in a blog posting. "Our investigation found
that while the other security updates were providing protections for
the issues discussed in the bulletin, the Windows XP SP2 and SP3
updates were not"

The aforesaid patch fixes a flaw in the way Windows uses the Bluetooth
networking protocol, used to connect peripheral devices like headsets
to the PC. An attacker who got close enough to the Windows system to
make a Bluetooth connection could theoretically send malicious packets
to the PC and take complete control of a victim's computer.

According to security experts that as Bluetooth devices need to be
within a few yards of a computer to connect, the flaw wouldn't be used
in a widespread attack. However, this doesn’t decrease its potential
threat.

Microsoft is now pushing out a new, working version of the patch through its automatic update mechanisms.

Motorola Inc, the No. 3 mobile phone maker, said it would roughly halve
the size of its research labs to about 300 people as it plans to halt
some projects and move at least 180 people to other units.

The loss-making company, which is planning to spin off its cell phone
business amid huge market share losses and sharp criticism of its phone
designs, said 180 research labs workers would be moved to its three
business units, effective July 1.

Motorola has a network equipment and set top boxes unit and a
government and public safety business as well as its mobile phone
business, which ceded its No. 2 global ranking to Samsung Electronics
Co last year.

To reduce costs, another 150 Motorola research positions will be cut
worldwide as Motorola stops some research projects, according to
spokeswoman Maya Komadina, who did not disclose which projects would
end or in which countries.

She said Motorola, which had 66,000 employees at the end of 2007, was
looking for opportunities in other parts of the company for eligible
workers affected by the cutbacks.

The spokeswoman said that moving researchers to the business groups
they support would help focus research investment on projects that
deliver the greatest value.

The remaining research organization's roughly will be renamed the
Applied Research & Technology Center and focus on longer-term
technologies. Its roughly 300 workers will be under Dan Moloney, head
of Motorola's networks and set-top box unit.

Motorola, which has been losing ground in the cell phone market after
failing to come up with a strong successor to its once-lauded Razr
phone, is expected to spin off its mobile devices business in 2009.

McAfee is set to release a study late on Tuesday that indicates the
domains that tend to be the most dangerous or malware-prone on the Web,
and at the top of the list is the Hong Kong (.hk) domain.

The McAfee Mal Web report, which serves as a safety guidebook to risky
online neighborhoods, reveals that 19.2 percent of all Web sites ending
with the .hk domain pose a security threat to Web users, followed by
China (.cn), the Philippines (.ph), Romania (.ro) and Russia (.ru).

By contrast, the safest domains on the Web are Finland (.fi), Japan (.jp), Norway (.no), Slovenia (.si), and Colombia (.co).

In general, the chance of downloading spyware, adware, viruses, or
other undesirable software from surfing the Web increased 41.5 percent
over 2007, the report found.

To arrive at these conclusions, McAfee researchers used the company's
SiteAdvisor tool, which crawls the Web and clicks "yes" to test
everything from downloadable software, screensavers, and peer-to-peer
file-sharing clients to photo upload utilities, and e-mail and
newsletter sign-ups.

The tool then monitors what happens to the test computer after it
engages with the sites, looking particularly for risky things like
malicious downloads, exploits, viruses, and spyware. Each site is then
rated based on the behavior, with buttons on the browser colored green,
yellow, or red for computers that have the tool downloaded.

Even if the greatest percentage of dangerous sites use the .hk domain,
that doesn't mean they are all based in Hong Kong or that more malware
distributors are located there, said Shane Keats, a research analyst
for McAfee. Many sites, particularly the malicious software sites,
choose the most affordable domain registrars in countries with the
least regulation, so usually they are not located in that country, he
said.

While registrars in China charge as little as 15 cents for a
registration and others are free, sites with domains in Japan and
Australia are found to be safer partly because those countries require
proof that a company is incorporated to use their top-level domains, he
said.

In addition, English speakers shouldn't feel safer just because many of
the more risky domains are in foreign countries, because many of those
sites are still presented in English, according to Keats. For instance,
nine times out of 10, sites with the Romanian domain will be in
English, he said.

The damage from risky sites runs from the "apocalyptic to the annoying," according to Keats.

"It can be as minimal as a pop-up track, and I can't exit out or it
opens a new pop-up window and I have to reboot, (to) other sites where
you just touch the site and you have downloaded software that turns the
machine into a bot in a bot army that sends spam," he said.

A Web surfer has a 1-in-20 chance of "hosing" the computer if a file is
downloaded at random from the Internet, while the odds increase to 1 in
10 if the file comes from an Italy (.it) domain and 1 in 7 if it comes
from a Romania domain, he said.

As for online porn, those sites aren't considered any more risky than
other types of sites on the Web in general, despite the common belief
that they are, he said.

Because they have viable business models, porn sites don't need to use
malicious software to make money. However, "when they are bad, they are
really, really bad, and among the worst of the spammers and exploits,"
Keats said.

The new PDF Portfolios feature in Acrobat 9 lets users drag and drop
content into a portfolio, then choose from myriad layout and
presentation options.

Mapping features only in Acrobat Pro Extended 9 preserve geospatial
coordinates and enable users to mark locations and measure distances.

The next Acrobat will take snapshots of Web pages and convert entire
pages or chunks of them to a PDF that preserves links and animation.

Developers can tweak layouts with Flex Builder 3 or Flash CS3.

For creating online forms, Acrobat 9 adds intelligence to recognize
content for conversion to fillable fields. And a forms tracking
dashboard will show, for instance, the status of responses to a mass
party invitation e-mail and let a user send reminders to guests.
Responses can be sorted, filtered, and exported to spreadsheets.

Acrobat 9's security enhancements enable users to add 256-bit encryption, used by banks online, to PDFs.

Business users could opt to access documents at Acrobat online or via SharePoint workspaces, network folders or WebDAV.

Acrobat 9 comes in three flavors, set for stores in the coming weeks:
Standard at $299 or $99 to upgrade, Pro for $449 or $159 to upgrade,
and Pro Extended for $699 or $229 to upgrade. Pro Extended also comes
with Adobe Presenter, which plugs into Microsoft PowerPoint 2007 for
adding interactivity to presentations.

When we discuss improvements to search technology, we tend to focus on
the open web while overlooking its more novel uses behind the firewall.
So it's good to point out advancements being made behind the scenes
from time to time, even if consumers don't directly benefit.

Paglo is a Palo Alto-based startup is launching a product into public
beta that empowers IT professionals with keyword search. Its crawler
doesn't index documents, images, and other forms of media found on the
internet. Rather, it identifies the resources within a corporate or
organizational network (such as devices, users, and software) and
essentially makes the information available about them Google-able.

Since Paglo is a hosted solution, IT departments need only to install
an open source crawler that will send indexed data to Paglo's servers,
where they are held in a designated silo. We're told the process of
setting up Paglo for a given department takes only minutes, after which
IT admins can sign in from anywhere to search their networks.

In addition to simple keyword search, users can set up Google
Alert-like notifications for when certain changes occur within a
network (for example, when memory gets low on a particular machine).
Search queries can be saved as tables, graphs or lists and displayed
alongside each other on a dashboard for quick viewing. These queries
can also be shared through a built-in community with other IT admins
who might be interested in seeing how you keep tabs on your resources.

Paglo signed up 800 companies during its private beta period, which
started last Fall. The service will remain completely free through at
least the summer, after which it will be sold on a subscription basis.

According to researcher ComScore Google increased its share of US
Internet search traffic drawing 61.6 per cent of all queries in April
compared with 59.8 per cent in March.

On the other hand, Yahoo and Microsoft saw their queries and market share drop in April.

While Yahoo fielded 20.4 per cent of searches, down from 21.3 per cent,
Microsoft's share came down to 9.1 per cent from 9.4 per cent.

With this lead in Internet search traffic, Google can charge more for advertisements displayed next to query results.

Google's ad fees per search were as much as 70 per cent higher than
Yahoo's at the end of last year. Yahoo and Microsoft combined share of
the Internet search market has fallen below 30 per cent.

This raises questions about whether Microsoft's failed attempt to acquire Yahoo for $33 per share would have been worth it.

Obviously ComScore data shows the utter failures of both Microsoft and
Yahoo to beat Google in search. And these figures put Google in the
limelight as it is committed to remain dominant in the search market
and thereby increase revenue and profits.

Time Warner Inc's AOL Internet division will launch versions of its
video service in Canada, India and Taiwan on Thursday as part of an
aggressive global expansion.

By autumn, it will also introduce versions of its video portal, AOL
Video, in the UK, France and Germany, AOL Video senior vice president
Fred McIntyre said in an interview.

The expansion is part of Time Warner's plans to refashion AOL as a
free, advertising-dependent website, as well as to transform itself
into a one-stop shop for advertising services for other companies.

"If you look at usage patterns on online video, it is the first global
broadband user behavior," McIntyre said. "It happened everywhere in the
world at the same time."

International availability of online videos from the US has been held
up by copyright licenses, which are negotiated on a regional basis,
Internet executives said this week at the Reuters Global Media and
Telecoms Summit.

But AOL said it has sealed deals with local programming partners for its regional sites.

The availability of shows from US programming partners, such as Hulu, a
joint venture of News Corp and General Electric's NBC Universal, or CBS
Corp, is unclear and varies depending on partners

The foundation of the services is built around AOL's video search
technology, Truveo, which has indexed, or searched and sorted related
information on than 170 million videos in 16 countries including

Microsoft introduced several new and updated features in connection
with an updated version of Live Search for Windows Mobile, continuing
its efforts to strengthen its hand in the mobile device game.

The update provides a new way of organizing local information and
Internet searches, dubbed "Collections." The feature is designed to
aggregate frequent searches, making their results easier to access
while on the road - for instance, enabling a user to always look up
nearby events.

In addition, the update also provides deeper integration with Windows
Mobile phones, user generated PC content, and Web search, and offers
weather forecasts.

Microsoft's release of Live Search for Windows Mobile marks the
company's second major announcement on the mobile device front.
Microsoft also revealed that it would supply Windows Live services to
one of its fiercest competitors in the smartphone arena -- Research in
Motion (RIM).

Microsoft will now provide a version of its Windows Live services to
run on BlackBerry devices. Services for BlackBerry devices are
scheduled for summer release.

The efforts come as an indication of the burgeoning importance of
mobile search and services. A recent report from Juniper Research found
that by 2013, about 30 percent of the expected 4.2 billion owners of
wireless devices will depend on mobile device searches to find and
locate local digital information.

Live Search for Windows Mobile also adds a "map a contact" feature that
displays a map and directions to any contacts in the user's contacts
list. Enhancements to Web search include the ability to launch searches
directly from the client, according to the spokesperson. Additionally,
a new weather report feature includes four-day forecasts.

Buying Plano, Texas-based $22.1 billion EDS would give HP more tools to

Samsung, Intel, TSMC to develop next-gen chip - by Navtej Kohli

The top maker of memory chips, Samsung Electronics, had decided to team
up with top rivals Intel and TSMC to develop next-generation bigger
silicon wafers to boost efficiency in chip manufacturing.

Samsung said that it would work with the US-based Intel Corp, the
world's top maker of semiconductors, and Taiwan's TSMC, the world's
largest contract chip maker, to help migration of manufacturing
standards from the current 12-inch silicon wafers to 18-inch discs that
would yield more than double the number of chips.

The South Korean company said the cooperation plan called for a first pilot line to be operable by 2012.

Samsung has been exploring the moves to pizza-sized silicon wafers to
help them grab market share as demand surges for gadgets such as Apple
Inc's iPod.

"Increasing cost due to the complexity of advanced technology is a
concern for the future," Mark Liu, TSMC's senior vice president of
Advanced Technology Business, said in a statement.

"Intel, Samsung, and TSMC believe the transition to 450mm wafers is a
potential solution to maintain a reasonable cost structure for the
industry."

The size of a wafer, the silvery disks from which tiny chips are diced,
is critical to make production more efficient. A new generation of
larger wafers typically comes out each decade or so.

The group is planning to cooperate with the whole semiconductor
industry in order to establish common standards through the
International Sematech Manufacturing Initiative (ISMI) consortium.

Still, some analysts say cost is a major hurdle and the industry - from
semiconductor makers to the companies that make their equipment - needs
to agree on how to proceed.

A factory designed to make chips on 18-inch wafers could cost $10
billion or more to build, nearly triple the price of a current 12-inch
wafer factory.

Only the biggest companies, like Intel, Samsung and TSMC, have the
resources to be the first adopters of the new technology, while smaller
chip makers, such as those in China, are unlikely to buy into the
expensive plan soon, they say.

are not necessarily in line with those of the Chinese government, the
government may be blocking access to the site.

The current blocking may be related to the upcoming Communist Party
Congress, which begins Oct. 15 in Beijing. Held once every five years,
the meeting is the Chinese government's most important political
gathering, used to create five-year plans, which are the bedrock of
China's centrally-planned economy. It is also often used to reshuffle
government positions or for leaders to consolidate their power.

While Wikipedia's English site is occasionally available, its
Chinese-language sites are almost permanently blocked, although access
is sometimes permitted for one or two days at a time.
